이 책은 클라리넷의 특수기교를 다룬 책으로, 연주에 있어 이런 특수기교들이 필요한 현대음악을 중점으로 설명하고 있다. 미분음운지 microtonal pitch modifications,  다중음운지 multiphonic fingering, 대체운지 Color Fingerings, 아주 높은 음역의 운지, 리드 이빨로 물고 연주하기, 나팔꼭지로만 연주하기, 순환호흡 circular breathing 등등 현대클라리넷  특수기교들을 뵘식클라리넷을 기준으로 총망라하고 있고, 제 5장에서는 마이크, 스피커, 앰프 등 현대음향장비들을 클라리넷과 어떻게 결합해서 쓸 수 있는지에 대해서도 다루고 있다. 미국 레드랜즈 Redlands 대학교의 클라리넷 교수였던  필립 레펠트 Phillip Rehfeldt 가 쓴 이 책은 현재 미국의 몇몇 음악대학에서 전공교재로  쓰이고 있다.

클라리넷 특수기교를 다룬 책들은 많지만, 한 권에서 이렇게 여러 기교들과 그 가능성을 총망라한 책은 드물다. 저자의 논리적인 분류와 명쾌한 설명이 돋보이는 책이다. 특히 각종 운지표가 잘 나와 있으며, 각각의 특수기교들이 쓰이는 현대음악의 예도 많이 수록되어 있다. 부록으로 클라리넷을 위한 현대음악들을 상당량 정리해 놓았으며, 주로 미국연주가 중심이긴 하지만 현대음악에서 두각을 나타내는 연주가들도 소개하고 있다.

클라리넷 직업연주가, 학교에서 특수기교를 익혀야 하는 전공생, 또  클라리넷 현대음악을 쓰려는 작곡과 학생들에게 추천하고 싶은 책이다.
